Why I'm Running

People like me don’t often make it to Parliament. I was raised in Grimsby, where a local charity looked after me when I experienced homelessness. Their help set me on the right path. Paying my way through university, from pulling pints to working shifts in shops, built my resilience. That inner strength is something that communities need as much as individual people, and it’s that same strength that sits in me, giving me the desire to fight for something better.

From securing a safe home for a family with a disabled child, to pushing for investment in clean green jobs — building stronger communities drove my work as your MP, and it’s what drives me to serve Grimsby again, the town I’ve called home nearly all of my life.

Outside of Parliament, I’ve strengthened our claim as the green energy capital of England. Bringing community organisations and companies together to deliver new skills, more jobs, and stronger trade union recognition in the sector.

As a director of a community energy scheme, I’ve brought cheaper energy to our area. Working for RenewableUK, I developed a pathway for veterans to access high-skilled green jobs. And as a trustee of a local youth project, I’ve helped give vulnerable young people support and a safe space. In our local Party, I’ve never stopped pitching in to make a difference.

Ours is a self starting place and we’re not shy of graft but we need the right tools. We’re out on the coast but needlessly out on a limb under the Tories. I will put Grimsby and Cleethorpes front and centre of Labour’s new industrial strategy, embracing the benefits of renewables to our local economy. Establishing a business network, to ensure local entrepreneurs are heard and get the support they deserve. And fighting for our fair share of funding to give everyone the chance to reach their full potential.

These are my pledges to you, backed up by my record. I’ll be the visible and accessible MP that Grimsby and Cleethorpes deserves — someone embedded in the heart of this community, who will work tirelessly for it.

My priorities for
Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes

People in Grimsby and Cleethorpes have been hit hard by the Conservatives’ Cost of Living crisis and they want the chance to stand on their own two feet. A job, fair pay for a decent standard of living, a good pension. These are Labour Values.

Over a third of children in Grimsby and Cleethorpes are growing up in poverty. It can define the rest of their lives. They have a right to a better start in life. As our older generations have a right to dignity in their later years, free from loneliness, a warm home and accessible social care.

Opportunities support personal aspiration, whether returning to work after children, injury or illness access to quality training is essential. We each learn in different ways, no one deserves to be written off at any age. Learning is an investment in our future.

We should all have the right to feel secure in every part of our town, free from the fear of crime and with access to justice when things go wrong.
High crime is worrying for residents and off putting to visitors, undermining the efforts community groups have made to improve our area.

For our local economy and businesses to grow, transport networks must be fit for purpose.

Disappearing buses and trains set Grimsby and Cleethorpes back, and sees our homegrown talent move away.

Roads should be safe and properly maintained with safe space for cyclists.

Fighting for Workers’ Rights

Following the Brexit referendum, Melanie recognised that there was a risk that all protections for working people held in European legislation, could be lost as they were removed from the statute books. Determined to ensure that people weren’t detrimented she launched a campaign and a Private Members Bill that sought to protect them.

Protecting against the loss of local jobs

Youngs risked losing 400 jobs, Melanie met with workers at the factory, management and Ministers, and those livelihoods were protected. Novartis announced closure and Melanie formed a taskforce. The site was extended for an additional two years to support staff in finding alternative employment.

Save the NHS

Melanie brought together campaigners who were concerned about the erosion of local services, increased waiting times and difficulties in reaching their GP. Local hospitals are spending more on contractors and locums than ever before because they can’t get the right staff. This is impacting on the quality of care available to local people.

Support for UK Fishers

As the Chair of the influential Fisheries APPG Melanie secured an annual debate on the important issue of fishing, raising the need for support for coastal communities, investment in seafaring and maritime skills and recognition of the importance of the processing industry.
